Vetspire® WINK App for Ophthalmology
WINK by Vetspire® is a mobile app for animal ophthalmologists to easily complete medical exams and record diagnostics. The WINK app links directly to open encounters in Vetspire – you can view appointments, record test results, illustrate diagrams, and then sync all of the information back to Vetspire to populate in the patient chart. WINK is designed for iOS tablets (iPads) and is downloaded from the Apple App Store.
Sign in to WINK with your Vetspire credentials.
Enter your Vetspire Username and Password, then select Show Wink Commercial. In the Wink Commercial field, enter the first part of your location’s Vetspire URL. For example: clinic.vetspire.com. Select SIGN IN.
Create Ophthalmology Appointment in Vetspire
WINK exams start with the same step as other encounter types: creating an appointment in Vetspire.
Your Vetspire Implementation Team will set up WINK-specific encounter templates for your practice. When creating an appointment for an ophthalmology patient, select an appointment Type that includes (Ophtho) in the title, then select Book.
Appointments CANNOT be created in the WINK app.
Appointments with the WINK-specific ophthalmology encounter template can only be created in Vetspire.
Open an Exam in the WINK App
Select the appointment on the Home screen.
Verify the patient chart information, then select Start Exam.

Start the Encounter in Vetspire
The exam in the WINK app can be run at the same time as the encounter in Vetspire.
For example: A technician may start the encounter in Vetspire to record the patient’s vitals, information from the client, and other observations. Then, the ophthalmologist conducts the exam and records their findings in the WINK app. Saved exam notes entered in the WINK app will populate in the encounter in Vetspire.
To open an encounter in Vetspire, select the appointment in Schedule and select Start Appointment.
Conducting an Exam in WINK
The WINK exam includes five tabs: Exam Form, Neuro Form, Eye Drawing, Sections, and Whiteboard.
As you move through each tab of the exam, select Completed or Not completed at the bottom of the screen to save your work.
In case you need to pause and then continue the exam in WINK at a later time, the exam tabs are color-coded on the Home screen to inform you of your progress:
Green: Completed
Yellow: Not completed
White: Not started
A green checkmark displays when all tabs are Completed and the encounter is signed in Vetspire.

Example Workflow
You are an ophthalmologist. An rDVM refers a client to your practice. You conduct the initial ophthalmology exam in WINK, and the client and patient go home. At the end of the day, you can view all of the day’s appointments on the WINK Home screen and see which exams you still need to complete – add comments, final instructions, etc. – using the green and yellow visual indicators.
Exam Form: Ocular Diagnostics
WINK encounters open to the Exam Form tab by default. Here, you can record test results for each eye in the Ocular Diagnostics - Baseline and Ocular Diagnostics - Ancillary sections. You can also enter any Diagnostic Comments.
For each eye, three quick options display at the top of the Exam Form if you do not need to enter information for that eye:
Enucleated = The eye has been surgically removed
NA = Not applicable
NE = Not examined
Neuro Form
In the Neuro Form tab, you can record findings from Neuro-Ophthalmic Exam Procedures for each eye.
Eye Drawing
The Eye Drawing tab enables you to annotate eye diagrams using Apple’s Smart Annotation tool.
There are two steps to save your drawing:
Select Save changes in the top right of the screen to save the drawing in the WINK app. (This button only displays when you have drawn something on the screen.)
Select the plus sign in the bottom right of the screen, then select Mark complete & save to complete the section and save the drawing to Vetspire. This marks the Drawing tab on the WINK Home screen as Completed/green.
Alternatively, select Mark incomplete & save to save your drawing in the WINK app. This marks the Drawing tab on the WINK Home screen as Not completed/yellow.
When you select Mark complete & save, the drawing file is saved in the Attachments section of the encounter in Vetspire:
What is the CSV file saved with my drawing in Attachments?
When you save a Completed eye drawing in the WINK app, a CSV file is also saved to the Attachments section of the encounter in Vetspire. This CSV file contains the code for the Smart Annotation tool brushstrokes you make, which enables you to view the drawing history and bring forward previous drawings in the WINK app.
Additional Options in the Eye Drawing Tab
Select the ellipsis in the top right corner of the Eye Drawing tab to view additional options:
History: Displays a menu at the bottom of the screen from which you can select drawings from previous exams. The drawings are view-only and cannot be edited.
Bring Forward: Displays a copy of the last drawing from the patient’s most recent WINK encounter to make new edits on the drawing. This creates a new version of the drawing and does NOT replace the original.
New Drawing: Select to clear all your brushstrokes and start your drawing over, or to clear the drawing displayed by the Bring Forward option.
Preview: Displays a preview of the exam PDF, which includes the Exam Form, Neuro Form, Sections, Attachments list, and Eye Drawing.
Sections: Summary Notes and Client Instructions
Think of the Sections tab as the conclusion of the ophthalmology exam. This is where you can record the prognosis for each eye, a summary of the assessment and discussion with the client, medication instructions, and comments for the rDVM. All notes added in each section are saved to the corresponding section in the encounter in Vetspire.
Under Attachments, select Take Photo to capture pictures with your iPad camera and edit, crop, and annotate the pictures before saving. Select Review to view all file attachments added to the encounter in Vetspire and the images you have added from the WINK app.
Optional: Whiteboard
The Whiteboard tab is designed specifically for client communication. Like the Eye Drawing tab, use Apple’s Smart Annotation tool to illustrate your assessment and diagnosis. Think of the Whiteboard tab as your virtual notepad! This section is optional and is not required to complete the WINK exam or close the Vetspire encounter.
Closing the Encounter in Vetspire
Once all exam tabs are marked as Completed in the WINK app (and display in green on the Home screen), you can complete and sign the encounter in Vetspire as usual. There is no further action required in WINK.
On the WINK Home screen, the appointment displays with a green checkmark once the encounter is signed in Vetspire.
Completed WINK exams are locked at the same time as signed encounters.
The WINK app respects the Prevent Encounters Being Re-opened After (X Hours) setting in Vetspire > More > Admin > Preferences.
For example, let’s say you set this preference to 48 hours. Once the encounter is signed in Vetspire, the WINK exam is only open for edits for 48 hours. After 48 hours, the exam is locked in WINK and cannot be edited.
